I was born in Hamilton and raised in Peterborough where I graduated from Crestwood Secondary School. I have earned degrees from Trent, Queen’s, and McMaster Universities.
After having to move to Peel County to begin my teaching career, I was able to return home as Head of History at Lakefield District Secondary School. I was seconded to the Board office for two years to be the Secondary School Program Consultant. In 1997 I moved to Lakefield College School where I was the Dean of Social Science and the Director of Summer Programs. I retired in June 2022.
I met Sue when we were 17 and students at Crestwood and we are still very much in love. We have a beautiful daughter and two beautiful granddaughters and are blessed that they live close by.
I have always believed in serving the community. When I was 37, I was elected to serve as Lakefield’s Deputy Reeve and Peterborough County Councillor. I have been the Board Chair of the Lakefield Library, Morton Community Healthcare Centre, and the Peterborough Social Planning Council. I am now, for the second time, Chair of the Board of the Lakefield Literary Festival and a member of the Morton Community Healthcare Centre Board. I have also served on the Boards of ORCA, Lakefield Police, and Children’s Aid. In addition, I have volunteered with many groups including the Lakefield Jazz and Arts Festival, Imagine the Marsh, the Lakefield Environmental Action Forum, and Ontario’s Fair Tax Commission.
I have written eight books addressing Canadian history and politics. I contribute editorials for newspapers across Canada and write entries for the Canadian Encyclopedia. I am invited to appear on television and radio to discuss current political events.
I have run four marathons and several half marathons and I play hockey in a Peterborough league. I was once signed to a recording contract and released three songs that I composed, one of which was a minor hit in Canada and even made #2 in Sweden – go figure. I am the lead guitarist and singer in a pop-rock band called The Footnotes – grown men playing rock ‘n’ roll and having far too much fun for our own good. We recently played the Vintage Car Show in Lakefield.
In October 2022, I was elected Selwyn Township’s Lakefield Ward Councillor. I look forward to gathering my skills, experience, and passion to serve and represent the people of Lakefield and the township.

I recall how much you enriched my daughter’s time at LCS! Thank you and congratulations on your chosen path to fulfillment and happiness!
Thank you for your kind words. I sincerely appreciate it.
Hello Mr Boyko,
I remember how you also enriched my time at LCS, both in class and a memorable trip to Gettysburg. Congratulations on your recent publications, and wishing you success on Crossroads.
Read your article in Ottawa Citizen today on having Artists on banknotes. Couldn’t agree more. Kudos on your books. Went to your web site and and very impressed. Will need to read further.
Larry Beaton (south House)
It’s been a long time, glad you sent a note. I still see a number of south house guys and we always end up talking about the good old days. Hope you are well.
I moved downtown Toronto in 1965 where some draft dodgers became friends. I was 20 years old at the time and not very politically astute. Tonight listening to your interview on CBC I became aware of how much I did know or didn’t know about the Vietnam war. Thank you for bringing me up-to-date. I have always been interested and I appreciate your bottom line candid explanation of the events that took place.
I look forward to reading your book.

Hello Joyce, I was not politically astute at 20 either, I think most of us were not. Thank you for leaving me this messsage. I hope you enjoy the book.
