Biography

Boyko-9 2

I am hard at work on my 9th book that will published in the spring of 2026. It is a biography of an amazing Canadian whom I believe we need to know more about for the life he led and the questions that his life and accomplishments pose that are relevant today: Sir Sandford Fleming. The book is entitled Fleming: In Pursuit of Tomorrow.

I have written eight other books addressing Canadian history and politics, including The Devil’s Trick: How Canada Fought the Vietnam War and Blood and Daring: How Canada Fought the American Civil War and Forged a Nation. I have also written a biography of local icon Nick Lalani that he self-published. I have contributed editorials for newspapers across Canada and over 100 entries for the online Canadian Encyclopedia. I have been invited many times to appear on television and radio to discuss my books and current political events and have enjoyed public speaking engagements across Canada.

I was born in Hamilton and raised in Peterborough, where I graduated from Crestwood Secondary School. I have earned degrees from Trent, Queen’s, and McMaster Universities.

I enjoyed a career in education, teaching history and politics in Peel County, then returning home as Head of History at Lakefield District Secondary School. I was seconded to the Board office for two years as the Secondary School Program Consultant, then moved to Lakefield College School, where I was the Dean of Social Sciences and then Director of Summer Programs. I retired in June 2022.

I met Sue when we were 17. We are still very much in love. We have a strong and beautiful daughter and two wonderful granddaughters. We’re blessed that they live close by.

I have always believed in serving the community. When I was 37, I was elected Lakefield’s  Deputy Reeve and Peterborough County Councillor. I returned to municipal politics in the fall of 2022, when elected Selwyn Township’s Lakefield Ward Councillor. I have served on the Boards of the Otonabee Regional Conservation Authority (ORCA), Lakefield Police, Children’s Aid, Imagine the Marsh, the Lakefield Jazz, Arts and Crafts Festival, the Lakefield Environmental Action Forum, the Ontario Fair Tax Commission, and the Peterborough Police Service. I’ve chaired the Boards of the Lakefield Library, Peterborough Social Planning Council, Morton Medical Centre, and am currently Board chair of the Lakefield Literary Festival.

Boyko at Commemoration of Death of Sir John A

I’m a regular at the local gym, have run four marathons and several half-marathons, and enjoy hockey twice a week in the winter and duffer golf in the summer. I was once signed to a recording contract and released three songs that I composed, one of which was a minor hit in Canada and even made #2 in Sweden – go figure. I am the lead guitarist and singer in a pop-rock band called The Footnotes – grown men playing rock ‘n’ roll and having far too much fun for our own good.

I’m enjoying a busy life informed by family, friends, fun, and service.

  2. Hello Mr Boyko,

I remember how you also enriched my time at LCS, both in class and a memorable trip to Gettysburg. Congratulations on your recent publications, and wishing you success on Crossroads.

  3. John,

Read your article in Ottawa Citizen today on having Artists on banknotes. Couldn’t agree more. Kudos on your books. Went to your web site and and very impressed. Will need to read further.

  4. I moved downtown Toronto in 1965 where some draft dodgers became friends. I was 20 years old at the time and not very politically astute. Tonight listening to your interview on CBC I became aware of how much I did know or didn’t know about the Vietnam war. Thank you for bringing me up-to-date. I have always been interested and I appreciate your bottom line candid explanation of the events that took place.
I look forward to reading your book.
